PROVENANCE: In 1856, the Johnson foundry of Philadelphia cut the first patriotic metal type in ‘National’ for one- and two-colour working – stars in the upper half, stripes in the lower. An innovation that sat at the cusp of the burgeoning revolution in colour printing with chromatic wood types. The graphic elements of ‘Old Glory’ used as ornamentation on a base style of letter may seem obvious and perhaps well tried, but there is a paucity of similar solutions on wood types – ‘Gothic Star Ornamented’ and ‘American’ are among the few early contenders.
INCLUDED: 52 individual high-resolution JPG images, featuring two distinct variations of each letter of the alphabet. The first presents a fuller, densely inked print, while the second features a lighter press with uneven pressure, creating a more distressed and characterful appearance. Find out more
