PROVENANCE: The revival of ‘old face’ during the 1840s through the reappearance of Caslon’s original roman in contemporary bookwork, had pressed founders into reconsidering the worthiness of their own back catalogues. Old fonts were revived to capture the zeitgeist. In 1860, the first version of ‘Old Style’ was cut by Alexander C Phemister for the Edinburgh firm. Its remarkable success led to a steady introduction of further variants and the making of a series of compatible types. The nuances in this version give it some personality and individuality – the stress in the leg of G and the condensing of C – both traits of the model, somewhat overemphasised in this version.
INCLUDED: 52 individual high-resolution JPG images, featuring two distinct variations of each letter of the alphabet. The first presents a fuller, densely inked print, while the second features a lighter press with uneven pressure, creating a more distressed and characterful appearance. Find out more
