PROVENANCE: Around 1880, a new movement of interest in mediaeval revivalism – both in architectural decoration and forms associated with old-style and artistic printing – started to evolve. The Latin-Runic became heavily ornamented, sometimes wildly exaggerated into hybrid forms. The well-spring was in America, where invention and industry led the march. This is ‘Campanile’. Another from the hand of William W Jackson for MacKellar, Smiths & Jordan in 1879. Its elongated form may have inspired the original naming – from the bell tower – and the sphere pendant clapper of the bell can be seen in the broken bar of A and H.
