NUMBERS: 0 to 9
PROVENANCE: Originally cut in metal by Edward Prince in association with Frederick Tarrant for the Edinburgh typefoundry Miller & Richard in 1877. This is the generic ‘Tudor Black’, modelled on fifteenth-century Rotunda forms prevalent in Italy and Spain. A round, wide style of [Round-text] Blackletter, classified by De Vinne as ‘Old Black’ and originally designated ‘Old Tudor Black’ by Miller & Richard. A style that became truly international and copied under several names – ‘Cathedral Text’; ‘Mediaval-Gotisch’; ‘Psalter-Gotisch’; ‘Durer-Gotisch’; and ‘Gotico-Medieval’, among others.
